WDFW logo re-design and style guide

Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (2023-2024)

In 2023, I led the redesign of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) logo to address longstanding accessibility issues, especially in print applications. The updated logo system includes 15 variations optimized for versatile layout use across various platforms. This redesign significantly improves clarity, legibility, and brand consistency.

Key Improvements:

  • Thickened Sky Lines: The sky lines were reinforced to improve the visibility of the mountain silhouette, which is created through negative space. In the previous logo, the mountain often appeared faint due to overly thin sky lines.

  • Removal of White Animal Borders: I eliminated the white outlines around the animals to create a cleaner and more professional appearance.

  • Refined Animal Shapes: Subtle enhancements were made to the animals for better definition. The deer’s contours, including its rear, were refined, and the crab shape was smoothed to improve clarity and recognition.

  • Enlarged Logotypes: All text elements were scaled up to improve legibility, particularly in smaller formats and print materials.

Testing and Implementation:

The redesign process spanned several months and included rigorous testing across digital and print media, covering a wide range of paper sizes. I established minimum size requirements for all logo variants and defined precise CMYK, RGB, and PMS color specifications. These standards are now part of the agency’s official style guide, ensuring consistency across all branding efforts.

Motion Branding:

To complement the visual identity, I also created an animated version of the logo using Adobe After Effects. I developed this into a Motion Graphics Template (MOGRT) for Adobe Premiere Pro, which is now used as the opening and closing sequence in agency videos—enhancing our visual storytelling and brand recognition.

Logo Design for Outreach Materials

Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (2023-2025)

I have led comprehensive branding initiatives, creating logos that span print, digital, and promotional formats. The logo examples shown above represent a range of applications, including app branding (e.g., Fish WA app), program identities (e.g., WDFW Volunteer), association branding (e.g., Washington Association of Retired Fish and Wildlife Employees), and public campaigns (e.g., Habitat and Home). Many of these logos were also adapted into stickers, pins, and magnets for public outreach and events.

Each design was carefully tested for accessibility across print and digital platforms. I personally reviewed and approved all production proofs to ensure high standards of quality, legibility, and consistency before final manufacturing.

Contributing to wildlife conservation and supporting the agency’s mission through intentional, visually compelling design is a privilege. I am committed to using my creative expertise to raise awareness and foster stronger public engagement with wildlife and habitat protection efforts.

WA DEI Empowerment Conference Logo Guide

Washington State Department of Natural Resources (2022)

The logo was designed and finalized in 2022. My role involved creating the complete set of logo variations and developing the corresponding logo guidebook. The graphic elements from this project are now widely used on OFM's website and in the conference meeting emails.
